Lilas Ebeid Shariq Rafiq

Lilas is a litigation specialist with 20+ years' experience as a lawyer in the UAE handling upper-tier public law matters including administrative law, commercial law disputes, insolvency, commercial, real estate, shipping, banking and white-collar crimes.

Lilas is best known for her extensive local UAE Court experience having litigated more than 1000 court cases in her career. She has over two decades of local experience, having argued memorable and benchmark cases in UAE, and standard setting proceedings before the local courts representing clients.

Lilas has studied litigation subject domains of real estate disputes, banking, Islamic finance disputes, insolvency and liquidation regimes. She has served and advised on steering committees on restructurings relevant to UAE local law, which gives clients a distinct advantage in understanding the laws and their application, given their recent coming into force.

Core Experience

  • Acting for a US construction conglomerate client in relation to defending enforcement process of a UAE-based developer on a major infrastructure project in Fujairah value of claim approx. USD $10 million.
  • Acting for numerous banks including National Bank of Fujairah, Emirates NBD, Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank, Al Ahli Bank, Standard Chartered and Emirates Bank International on various debt recovery claims and subsequently selling, by way of auction, assets owned by borrowers to satisfy outstanding money.
  • Acting for HSBC: Lilas was one of the lead primary external litigation counsels in region handling regulatory proceeding including crime, fraud, recovery and standard commercial dispute matters. Representing HSBC on commercial disputes, white-collar, fraud, asset retrieval and debt recovery in excess of hundreds of millions, e.g. over US $250 million.
  • Acting for TECOM in a number of commercial and property disputes arising out of non-payment of rent and cancellation agreements valued in excess of USD $10 million.
  • Acting for Etihad Holding (previously known as "Emaar Holding") in UAE Court litigation dispute value of approximately USD $21 million.
  • Advising Emirates Petroleum in a number of disputes relating to the sale of petroleum products.
  • Advising Honeywell in international arbitration and UAE construction contracts in the GCC.
